Over the years, Blue Marble Media has created numerous award-winning high-image video and TV spots with one of our favorite clients, The Voyager Group, a brand strategy agency located in Orange county, CA. Voyager’s founder, Vanessa Rose, and creative director, Russ Noe, have served clients such as: Two Rodeo Drive, One Scottsdale, The Irvine Company, SAAB, Verrado, The Bellevue Collection and many more.

In our most recent collaboration, Blue Marble teamed up with Voyager for a high fashion shoot for The Bellevue Collection, a retail and entertainment destination in Bellevue, Washington. Both stills and video were shot concurrently (same models, same set-ups, two distinct crews…tricky). The location was a beautiful contemporary home over looking Puget Sound. With Russ at the helm as executive creative director, the shoot was another success and the images were gorgeous. Blue Marble brought the video footage back to Atlanta for the post design work. The first TV spot will air as part of Bellevue’s Spring 2012 campaign.

Still frame from the Spring 2012 Bellevue TV spot

Recently, we sat down with Russ to discuss what goes into preparing for a high- fashion shoot – from brainstorming concepts … to picking out the models, location, wardrobe, music, and lighting. The following is an excerpt from our conversation:

BMM: So, Bellevue. This is just the latest in a series of campaigns and ads for The Bellevue Collection. What’s lead up to this point of the marketing campaign?

RN: Well, we began work a few years ago, and the Pacific-Northwest is not known for high fashion. It’s known for its intelligence – not fashion. Things like coffee, hostile weather, cool coastline, fishery come to mind. The people are hardy and intelligent. Our clients, however, wanted to introduce high fashion. We went up and shot on locations that would be familiar to them. Our client said, “You nailed it. You created a look that we can relate to. That steps it up.”

…Then the economy went in the dump. So, as a creative director, I have to be a psychologist. How do I get you to go shop? Creating looks that inspire people and make them feel happy. Now we’re on the third campaign, and it’s about talking directly to the customer. We’re creating a meaningful program for the property through commerce and culture. That inspired us to create a campaign that talks to the viewer. We want to say, “The stuff we have can be part of your collection.” What’s in your collection?

BMM: How much time is spent preparing for the shoot beforehand?

RN: Typically once a client picks a campaign direction, we flesh it out. Reverse-engineer it. How many assets do you need? What is your marketing strategy? If you need over the next year, say 60 images, and you’re going to run 4 spots… that’s where we begin. How many shots can we pull off in a day? How many days does it need to be? Then you start building your budget. That includes everybody from the agency, the stylists, crew, models, assistants, hair, make up, casting, and me! (It takes longer than you think – we looked at 500 people and hired 4 models.)

For shoots that average three to five days, it’s four to six weeks of prep. This includes fleshing out concepts and getting the client to bite on all the ideas…. It’s all predicated on what the clients needs are. Their budget. That dictates the length of the shoot. Then you try and fit everything in.

BMM: What’s it like working with Blue Marble for the video aspects of the campaign?

RN: You know, whenever we collaborate, we’re able to share things, and he (Ben) absolutely instantly gets the essence of what I’m after. He’s just able to really translate what I want on my end. Seamless. For instance, I sent him seven or eight pieces of music, very similar – electronica, light, ambient. I was sending him commercial music that we can’t use. I asked myself, “I wonder what he’ll do with this?” He came back with tracks and every track was perfect. He really gets me. I’ve never had a moment where we’ve felt disconnected. We respect one another. I know a little about his craft and I don’t want to know anymore. I just trust Blue Marble with it.

ATLANTA– Blue Marble Media, an Atlanta-based video, film, and motion graphics company, recently took home the prestigious Platinum MarCom Award for its Watching Hands video series featuring artists at work. The six-video series was created explicitly for the Georgia-Pacific sponsored Watching Hands exhibit at the CDC Museum. This marks the fourth consecutive year Blue Marble has taken home a Platinum MarCom Award for their corporate video work.

Watching Hands: Artists Respond to Keeping Well showcases the new work of six artists who interpret the act of hand washing in innovative and unexpected ways. The exhibit, showing at the David J. Sencer CDC Museum in Atlanta until January 12, 2012, features posters by James Victore of Brooklyn, NY, whose work has shown at MoMA and has appeared twice on the cover of TIME Magazine. Other featured artists include John Bankston, Joe Peragine, Katherine L. Ross, Didi Dunphy, and Laura Splan.

The six short documentaries, each about two minutes in length, are being shown as part of the exhibit, and are also available to view online.

The international MarCom competition receives about 5,000 entries annually from producers ranging in size from individuals to media conglomerates and Fortune 50 companies.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s holiday! We all had fun during our break. Some of us had a little bit more exciting times than others:

Chris saved his mother’s dog, Lizzie, from choking on a Christmas steak. With the help of some family members, Lizzie was given mouth to snout CPR before Chris managed to manually dislodge the steak from her throat and bring her back to life. Apparently, she spent a few minutes “on the other side”. So Chris was able to give the greatest gift of all – life!

Josh helped set 47 Christmas trees on fire on New Year’s Eve in an effort to dispose of the flammable decor in a somewhat controlled environment. Click the link below to watch the tree shenanigans in the video to get in touch with your pyro-barbaric side.

Steve and his family played in soap bubble snow in the small town of Celebration, FL. For those of you who don’t know, Celebration is pretty much owned by Disney, so of course they had soap bubble snow. It’s what dreams are made of!

Kelly wrestled with puppies during a Christmas Photo shoot to get the perfect shot. I think she nailed it. What do you think?

Ben and Cara received the gift they most wanted this year – quality time with their first grand baby, Audrey! And to top it all off… a magical visit with family to see the Christmas lights at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Here’s a cool clip we put together of our Blue Marble team’s recent experience at the 2011 Light The Night Walk in Atlanta. We raised a total of just over $1,300 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. When the walk commenced at sunset, we were there armed with a Blue Marble banner and each of us carrying an illuminated balloon. The view around Centennial Olympic Park was awe-inspiring, as thousands of glowing balloons literally “lit up the night.” We’d definitely recommend participating next year!

About Light The Night Walks and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Each year, in communities all across the United States and Canada teams of families, friends, co-workers and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Light The Night Walk events and bring help and hope to people battling blood cancers.

Light The Night Walk events are evenings filled with inspiration. During this leisurely walk, walkers carry illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Thousands of walkers – men, women and children – form a community of caring, bringing light to the dark world of cancer.

Blue Marble Media is really excited to be participating in the Light the Night Walk on November 5th for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Think you could help us with a donation — or maybe join us on the walk? Just click the “Donate Now” button below to make a contribution with a credit card to the Blue Marble team or click here to see our Team Page where you can find all the details for joining us on the walk. It’s a great cause and the “magical” illuminated balloons should be a beautiful sight as they’re paraded around Centennial Olympic Park!
