Nothing makes an impact like a personal testimonial. But, it’s not always convenient, practical or affordable to ask your customers, executives, industry experts and others to go to a studio or have a video crew come to them.
Thankfully, now it’s easier and more affordable than ever to capture those testimonials at a level of quality that’s much better than a typical video chat, even if it’s not as good as having a video crew on-site to do the job.
But because we’ve all gotten so used to the quality of online video chats and the smartphone videos on Tik Tok and YouTube, audiences are very accepting of a range of quality in their video viewing.
Today, advances in remote video recording technology make it possible for interviewees to use their own smartphones, computers or tablets while a producer on the other side of the state – or world – is able to make adjustments to “dial-in” a better looking picture and audio. The whole interview is conducted over the internet, but recorded locally to the interviewee’s device or one you send them.
Once the interview is “in the can”, the footage is automatically uploaded from the phone or laptop to the cloud. An editor in a different state or country can now download the footage, make additional corrections to color, lighting and audio and then continue with their normal process of crafting a finished video that can include other b-roll, still images, motion graphics and more.
In a series of videos we did recently for the Arthritis Foundation, people who are affected spoke about having difficulties which made them feel separated from others.
One of the biggest challenges of recording remotely is the lack of an experienced video crew to adjust lighting, find good backgrounds, position the camera at just the right height and angle, etc. So, our producer and director conducted a pre-interview prep call with each interviewee to walk through their home, experiment with available lighting (windows, table lamps, etc.) to find just the right background and even determine how many books would be needed to raise their laptop to the right height.
Taking extra time with the interviewees helped them feel comfortable and more relaxed in front of the camera. The end result is an interview with a natural flow that tells the story with personality and true emotions.
